Gas station to make way for new retail center on South Side

February 1, 2008

Paige Investments is developing a 6,000-square-foot shopping center on the city's South Side. The center will be located at 1935 SW Military Drive, just off Interstate Highway 35.

The project, which is slated to break ground next week, will be occupied by San Antonio National Bank and Starbucks.

To herald the start of construction, San Antonio-based Paige Investments is inviting the public to come out on Feb. 5 to see its founder, Robbie King, and District 4 Councilman Philip Cortez hop aboard a bulldozer. The duo will drive the machine into the front of a gas station that is being demolished to make room for the new retail center.

Of his latest project, King notes that it is strategically situated along the gateway to the South Side -- the I-35/Southwest Military Drive intersection.

Starbucks' decision to occupy the new center is yet another sign of its commitment to San Antonio's burgeoning South Side, King says. The local developer adds that he also is "honored that San Antonio Bank would choose this site for its newest branch."

"South Side development is not slowing. It's continuing on an upward trajectory," King says.

King's announcement about netting Starbucks for his new retail center comes just one day after the Seattle-based coffee chain announced that it would be closing 100 underperforming stores throughout the country.
